Description

The former stables at St John's College, also known as Ty-to-Maen, have been altered to serve as junior classrooms. This U-shaped building faces into a courtyard and features an entrance marked by two stone piers with pyramidal caps, a low wall, and partially replaced railings and gates that form the fourth side. Constructed in a rustic style using rubble with ashlar dressings, the rear elevation is made of brick. The roof is a combination of Welsh slate and artificial slate, adorned with polygonal brick stacks on stone plinths and terracotta ridge tiles of various designs.

Most of the windows are cross-framed, featuring chamfered mullions and transoms, with very small panes in the upper lights and the upper sash of the lower lights. The former carriage doorways have been filled in with panels that are part boarded and part glazed, incorporating matching small panes. The three main doorway bays are topped with half-timbered gables that have overhanging eaves and twin small-pane lights. Below the central gable is a doorway with a boarded door and a small pane overlight. At the end of the bay, there are cross windows on either side of a doorway. To the left, there are three separate doorways with boarded doors and flanking windows; to the right, there is a single doorway with additional windows. The outward-facing gable ends feature loft windows, with timber framing supported by brackets resting on a cornice moulding and shaped bargeboards. The outer-facing rear has five segmental-arched openings under the eaves.

The interior has been converted into classrooms.
