Description
Whitehall is a large suburban house built in the late Arts-and-Crafts style. It has two storeys plus an attic, featuring an unusually deep and steeply-pitched hipped roof. The exterior is finished in roughcast render with a tiled roof, overhanging roughcast eaves, and large blue brick chimney stacks at both ends, along with a smaller stack on the ridge. The windows are small-pane casement glazing with tiled sills.
The roadside elevation showcases three hipped tile-hung dormers in the steeply-pitched roof, which slopes down to the ends at an even steeper angle. The facade includes a four-window range, with a two-storey splayed bay on the right and a recessed ground floor garden loggia with a tiled roof on the left. The narrow eastern end features a brick plinth and a recessed round-arched doorway reminiscent of Lutyens, with the original door equipped with elaborate strap-hinges. To the right of the doorway, there is a lantern and bell-pull, and above it, a three-light first floor window sits beneath the hipped roof, while the roof sweeps down over a ground floor window to the left. At the rear, there are three hipped dormers similar to those at the front, with asymmetrical glazing; to the right, the roof slopes down over the kitchen block, and there is a large fire-escape.
Inside, the long staircase hall retains an oak staircase. The former study features oak panelling on the fireplace wall, along with built-in bookcases and a fireplace adorned with Delft tiles. The dining room has a low Tudor-arched fireplace with a stone surround and a herringbone brick back, complemented by four-panelled doors throughout.
