Description
The Church of St Catherine, part of the Church of England in Wales, is constructed from thin courses of dark brown Pontypridd stone rubble, with Bath stone ashlar dressings and Welsh slate roofs. It features a five-bay nave, a chancel, and side aisles, all topped with separate gabled roofs. At the east end of the south aisle is the Lady Chapel. The church is designed in a plain Gothic style with Decorated tracery, and the three sections of the building are not easily distinguishable. The north-east end of the church has a chancel that projects forward beyond the vestry and Lady Chapel, which includes a 3-light chancel window and a 2-light window in the Lady Chapel, as well as 2-light windows in the chancel returns. The side aisle windows are also 2-light, separated by buttresses, while the south-west end of the nave features a 5-light window above paired central doorways with pointed heads. There is a gabled porch at the center of the south aisle and a 2-centred doorway at the center of the north aisle.
The interior was not available for inspection during the resurvey due to the living being vacant. However, the listing description from May 1975 notes that the walls are faced with yellow brick, accented with red and black lacing courses. The nave arcade is supported by slender cruciform columns of stone, and the roofs are made of timber. The Glamorgan volume of The Buildings of Wales confirms these details and mentions a variety of 20th-century glass, including some by Comper.
