Description
The lychgate at the Church of St Michael incorporates a war memorial and is constructed from unstained oak. The base or plinth extends from the churchyard wall and is stepped up. It features narrow wooden double gates with pierced lancets and quatrefoils, long decorative hinges, and a moulded and swept top rail. The gabled roof is covered with slate and has deeply overhanging sprocketed eaves. The main doorway is Tudor-arched and is flanked by similar pierced lancets, which are decorated with carved bunches of grapes at the upper corners. An inscription from St John's gospel is located over the lintel, and there is a further inscription on the crossed timbers attached to the boarded gable, which is pierced by quatrefoils on the sides and has a cross at the apex. The side walls consist of panels of pierced lancets and quatrefoils, divided by plain battered panels. The west gable end mirrors the east but features seven quatrefoils above instead of the inscription.
Inside the porch, there are panelled pews against the side walls, and a metal plaque commemorates those who died in the First World War.
