Description
The Old House is a Grade II listed building featuring stone rubble walls, with the front wall whitewashed. It has a Welsh slate gabled roof, which includes 19th-century stone stacks with weathered tops at each end and to the left of center.
On the front elevation, starting from the south-west end, there is a three-light wood casement window above, and below it, a ledged door in a projecting stone porch that has been added since the building was listed in 1982. This door dates from the time of the left-hand extension, as the original entry to the house was through the gable. Slightly to the right on the first floor, there is another three-light casement window, and on the ground floor, a three-light casement window with an oak lintel, which has an internally located relieving arch above it. The right return features a two-storey lean-to extension, while the left return has a window on each floor at the rear.
The rear elevation includes a lean-to extension that nearly spans the full width of the building, topped with a corrugated sheeting roof that has a much lower pitch than the main roof, rising just under the eaves.
The interior was not inspected during the resurvey. However, the previous list description notes that the left-hand part of the house has straight joists, while the older or north-east part features a ground floor ceiling with three chamfered beams and stopped and chamfered joists. There is a fireplace with stairs to the north, leading to a doorway with an arched head and a small blocked single light window. On the first floor, there is a garderobe at the north-east end. The lean-to extensions are located at the rear and to the right-hand side. The RCAHMW confirms the exceptional survival of early wall coloring representing a dado, and also mentions a latrine in the north-east corner of the first-floor room. The roof structure consists of principal rafters with a single truss, a collar, and two tiers of purlins.
