Description
Tinkins Hall, formerly known as the Cory Institute, is a single-storey hall built in the Arts and Crafts style. The front elevation features buttressing and is constructed from coursed liassic rubble. It has a red tiled roof with overhanging eaves and red brick stacks that have corbelled caps and a string course. A louvered ventilator is located at the center of the hall roof, while the upper portion of the east gable is adorned with clay tile-hanging and a band of fish-scale tiling.
The hall includes a projecting gabled entrance porch at the east end of the front elevation, which has a cross-frame window set in a bracketed architrave, with tile hanging above it. Beyond the porch, there are three camber-headed tripartite windows on the main elevation of the hall, featuring small panes at the top.
In front of the hall, there are iron railings with stone gate piers topped with gabled caps. A later extension has been added to the rear of the hall, featuring a gabled bay on the east side and a round-headed arcade to the south.
Inside, the hall is open plan with a four-bay roof that includes a king post with curved supporting struts and an arcaded collar with round-headed bracing and under-hanging end finials. The bases of the trusses are arched and rest on corbels. The ceiling has diagonal boarding set into square bays, divided by purlins, trusses, and intermediate common rafters. There is a double panelled door with a plain surround at the northeast entrance to the porch, dado panelling throughout, and a platform at the west end with a door located in a former window adjacent to it.
