Description
Cottrell Lodge is a one and a half storey building constructed of local coursed limestone rubble, topped with a long straw thatched roof. It features a single storey lean-to extension at the western end, which has a slated roof. The front elevation includes four later modern timber casement windows, with two smaller casements positioned above them. There is a rubblestone chimney stack on the west gable. The east elevation has a hipped apsidal shape, with a central doorway and a thatched bonnet porch above it. On either side of the door, there is a timber ribbon mullion with four lights. The rear elevation has no windows.
The interior is accessed through an early 19th century hallway at the eastern end. The original single cell layout, which has a gable entry form, remains undivided and is heated by a substantial open fire at the western end, featuring a modern surround within the opening. A stone stair from the gable entry is located on the north side of the fire. The ceiling has a 19th century joist beam structure, with some early joists still visible. There is a small kitchen located in the later lean-to on the western end. The roof structure from the 19th century is visible beneath the thatch, showcasing exposed principal beams.
