Description
The gatehouse at Llanfythin Farmhouse, dated 1636, is a two-storey structure with lime-washed rubble walls and a pitched slate roof. On the east side, a flight of stone steps leads up to a large opening featuring a recessed doorway framed by a heavy, complex ovolo-moulded doorframe with fleur-de-lis stops. Above the doorway, the lintel is carved with "T.T.1636 BB," likely referring to Thomas Bassett. Inside, the first floor is accessed via an external stone stair on the southwest corner, leading to a boarded door. The interior consists of a single chamber that is un-ceiled, showcasing exposed oak joists and wide oak boards above. There are later ovolo-moulded three-light mullion windows on both the front and rear faces, with exposed timber lintels. A large open fireplace is located on the north face, featuring a projecting oak bressumer supported by stone corbels. The original roof structure is visible, consisting of principals without corners and two trenched purlins.
