Description
27-52 Park Terrace comprises a row of terraced houses built facing each other across pavements, a road, and a narrow green. The houses were constructed in the 19th century as a double row, arranged in pairs with a shared central stack and roofline. The rising ground between the pairs necessitated alterations to the roofline. The buildings are constructed of roughly dressed ironstone with snecked (irregularly placed) stones, with large stones framing each opening and featuring massive single lintels. Some brickwork is visible on the stacks. Originally roofed with Welsh slate, most have been replaced with concrete tiles, although blue brick ridge tiles remain. The original windows were 8/8 pane sashes, and a few of these survive; later replacements include horned sashes, with most glazing now being late-20th-century PVC-U, although the original window openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations originally featured similar glazing and, according to an Ordnance Survey map of 1875, lacked rear extensions—although these are now common. There are few dividing fences between properties. At the end of each double plot, separate stone and slate outbuildings, originally serving as WCs and coal sheds, survive in adapted form. The ends of the terrace, except for the south-east end, feature later houses that differ from the standard design.
