Description

This building is a purpose-built public convenience, designed in a simple classical style and constructed in 1924. The Ladies' facilities are located at the front, while the Gentlemen's facilities are accessed by stepping down to the rear. The gable end faces the front and is set into the slope of the site. The exterior features painted roughcast front and side elevations, with mainly rendered and painted dressings and some red brick. The roof is made of artificial slate and includes gable-roofed louvred ventilators, skylights, and a tiled ridge.

The gabled front has a stepped pediment with ball finials at each end. The pediment contains a Greek cross panel featuring the Porthcawl anchor emblem at the top, the name in the middle, and the date 1924 below in Art Deco style numerals. Brick pilasters are located at the ends and to the right of the Ladies' entrance, supporting a tall semi-circular arch with a keystone and an inset wrought iron tympanum. To the right of the entrance, there are twin semi-circular headed small pane windows that appear to have been renewed, featuring bottom opening segments, hoodmoulds, imposts, and keystones. Below these windows is a rendered panel strip and a red brick plinth.

On the left side, a continuous impost band steps down at the junction and links all eight windows, which are similar to those on the front but have decorative aprons. The Gentlemen's entrance, which is plainer, is located to the left of centre and features a square-headed doorway under a round-arched tympanum with a round light.

Inside, the building retains its original fittings, including full-height white tiling with cornices and other classical details, terrazzo floors, and dark wooden doors with round lights. There are partitions and attendants' offices, along with white cisterns and basins featuring brass taps, and urinals made by Pickup of Harwich. The Ladies' section includes a tiled lobby and Art Deco stained glass over the inner door, which incorporates lettering.
