Description

The Old Police Station is a building in the Tudorbethan style, dating from the late 19th century. It features a two-storey, gabled front with six bays. The exterior is made of rock-faced stone, with coursed stone on the left and snecked stone on the right, complemented by ashlar dressings. The roof is slate with terracotta ridge tiles and has large blue brick chimney stacks, which are paired on the left and grouped in six on the right, all with weathercoursing.

The first floor has mullioned sash windows, mostly in two-light configurations, while the ground floor has casement windows with mullions and transoms, including one cross frame and mostly three-light windows, all featuring relieving arches. There are narrow attic openings in the gables, paired on the right side.

To the left, the former Police Station has a central shouldered doorway next to a sash window, with a lintel that displays original lettering. Adjacent to this is a single-storey bay with a high parapet and cornice, which includes a three-light window at the front and a similar shouldered doorway on the side.

On the right is the former Superintendent's house, which now serves as the Porthcawl Museum and Art Society. It is visually separated from the Police Station by a deeply recessed pointed arched entrance with two orders and spur bases, featuring strapwork hinges on the boarded door. This section has three-light windows on both floors of the gabled bay at the right end.

There is a cross range to the right and a lean-to, with a front wall bonded in rubble and a broad shouldered gated entrance. The rear of the Police Station has gables and similar chimney stacks to an outbuilding in the rear yard.

Access to the interior is currently closed for refurbishment as of March 1997. The gaol is reported to be largely intact, featuring a whitewashed brick corridor, three cells with small pane windows, all with round arched brick vaulted ceilings, and boarded and studded doors, along with an exercise yard.
