Description

Nolton Tithe Barn is a two-storey, five-bay barn that dates from a later period. It has a gabled roof facing Merthyr Mawr Road, featuring a slate roof with overhanging eaves on the south side and close eaves on the north side. The structure is built of rubble masonry, with later brick dressings and insertions.

To the north, there is a later building that has been converted into a house, which is not of special interest, and a single-storey store building attached to the northwest corner. The south gable is roughcast and includes masonry steps with railings leading to the hayloft, a central door, and two smaller openings for access to the steps. There is also a small rectangular opening high in the south gable.

The east wall shows signs of former openings and alterations, with a later stair window positioned high up to the right. The north wall features a loophole with an oilette high in the gable, flanked by two smaller square openings known as putlogs. The west elevation has the store attached to the northwest, a wide central door with a brick cambered head, a narrow blocked doorway to the right, and a tall opening with a later door to the left.

On the north side of Merthyr Mawr Road, there is a stone wall attached to the southeast corner of the barn, along with decorative gate piers topped with large ball finials at the southwest corner.

Internally, the barn has been refitted in the 20th century, creating a large open space on the ground floor with a partition against the south wall. A straight flight stair is positioned against the east wall. The first floor contains two unequal rooms, with the smaller room showing evidence of blocked openings in the east wall. The barn features a suspended ceiling, with lower trusses visible.
