Description

The Grange is a former stables and coach house associated with Dyffryn House, built in the 19th century. The building features lofted stables and wings of the former coach house arranged at right angles, constructed from rock-faced Pennant stone and topped with slate roofs. The main range is tall, with two storeys, and showcases coped shouldered gables and a close-eaved roof.

The central entrance is broad and Tudor-arched, framed by rock-faced stone voussoirs and a deep hoodmould, situated beneath a stone-faced circular clock. Above, there is a large segmental-pointed window with three lights that breaks the eaves in the steep centre gable, which also has an eroded date plaque and a metal weather-vane dated 1862. Each side of the main entrance features small shouldered gables above narrow single light windows with cambered heads. The glazing in these windows was replaced during a 20th-century conversion, now featuring flat, thin glazing bars with diagonal bars in the top panes. On the ground floor, there are two large cambered-headed windows on each side of the entrance, also with 20th-century glazing. All windows are surrounded by rock-faced stone with flush sills, and a small 20th-century window has been inserted under the eaves to the left.

The two single-storey ranges that extend forward appear to have originally served as coach houses. The left range has later infill of painted brick between the original stone piers, while the right range retains similar rock-faced rubble stone walling, featuring a cambered-headed door and window with 2-light glazing, and a broad coach entry that has been infilled with stone and glazing beneath a timber lintel. The building has not been inspected.
