Description
9 Gelli Houses, built in 1883 for coal miners working for the Glyncorrwg Coal Mining Company, is a notable example of single-storey housing from this period. This type of house is one of the last of its kind. Each house has four rooms and a lean-to pantry at the back, with only two of the rooms originally heated. The houses initially shared a communal bakehouse, which had been demolished by 1904.
The structure consists of two rows of six double-fronted houses arranged end-to-end but not perfectly parallel. The walls are made of rubble stone and have been rendered, while the roofs have been replaced. Most of the original brick chimney stacks remain, although some are also rendered. The windows and doors have been replaced, but they are mostly in their original openings, with some enlarged windows.
