Description
11 Gelli Houses were built in 1883 for coal miners working at nearby pits owned by the Glyncorrwg Coal Mining Company. This single-storey construction is unusual and represents one of the latest examples of this type. Each house has four rooms and a lean-to pantry at the back, with only two of the rooms originally heated. The houses initially shared a communal bakehouse, which had been demolished by 1904.
The Gelli Houses consist of two rows of six double-fronted houses placed end-to-end but not quite parallel. The walls are made of rubble stone and are now rendered, while the roofs have been renewed. Most of the brick chimney stacks remain, with some also rendered. The windows and doors have been replaced, but they are mostly in their original openings.
