Description
The Gelli Houses, built in 1883 for coal miners working at nearby pits owned by the Glyncorrwg Coal Mining Company, are notable for their single-storey construction, making them one of the latest examples of this type. Each house consists of four rooms with a lean-to pantry at the back, although only two of the rooms were originally heated. The houses initially shared a communal bakehouse, which had been demolished by 1904.
The Gelli Houses are arranged in two rows of six double-fronted houses placed end-to-end but not quite parallel. The walls, originally made of rubble stone, are now rendered, and the roofs have been renewed. Most of the brick chimney stacks remain, with some also rendered. The windows and doors have been replaced but are mostly in their original openings. The roof is covered with replaced tiles.
