Description
The Gelli Houses, built in 1883 for colliers working at nearby pits owned by the Glyncorrwg Coal Mining Company, are a notable example of single-storey housing from this period. These houses feature a four-room layout with a lean-to pantry at the back, although only two of the rooms were originally heated. They initially shared a communal bakehouse, which had been demolished by 1904.
The Gelli Houses consist of two rows of six double-fronted homes arranged end-to-end but not perfectly parallel. The walls are made of rubble stone and have been rendered, while the roofs have been renewed. Most of the brick chimneys remain, with some also rendered. The windows and doors have been replaced, but they are mostly in their original openings. The houses have a replaced tile roof.
