Description

Nazareth Chapel is a classical-style chapel built with snecked, rock-faced stone and a slate roof. The front features three bays and is well-proportioned, with two tiers of round-headed openings. The upper tier has taller openings, all of which include keystones and sash windows with margin glazing. Below, the double panelled doors are set beneath an overlight that has radial glazing, etched glass, and coloured margin lights. The central bay features a Venetian window, flanked by narrow lights with pediments. The gable above has a pediment with a shield displaying the date of the chapel in engraved letters, and there are two round-headed windows below the apex. A string course runs between the two tiers of openings and continues around the right side wall, which is pebble-dashed and has an upper tier of round-headed windows that have been replaced in earlier openings, along with sash windows below. The moulded eaves cornice extends the moulding of the pediment to the front. The left side wall is constructed of rubble stone and features sash windows similar to those on the right side. The rear wall is roughcast and includes a narrower lower single-storey gabled vestry.

Inside, the vestibule has a glass panel opposite the doorway with coloured and etched glass, and the floor is made of decorative coloured tiles. The main chapel features a moulded ceiling cornice and an elaborate ceiling rose set in a boarded frame. A three-sided raked gallery is supported by fluted cast iron columns with foliage capitals and has a panelled gallery front. The numbered pews have shaped ends. The pulpit is panelled and includes steps on the left and right with turned balusters and square newels. Behind the pulpit is a reredos made up of fluted pilasters, consoles, and a round arch with a keystone, all enriched with classical mouldings.
