Description
2 Grove Cottages is part of a two-cottage range, built in the 18th century, facing south with a rear wing at the west end. The cottages are constructed of rubble stone under slate roofs, featuring roughcast gable ends and stone stacks, with a shared stack to the left of center and another at the right end. The building has raised verges and quoins, and the front displays Tudor-style mullioned windows, with three lights on the ground floor and two lights above. No 2 is located to the right, while No 3 is to the left.
The doorway is positioned to the right of center, symmetrically placed between the flanking windows. It features a flat-headed Tudor design with chamfered limestone dressings and a heavy planked door that has a hinge down the center and iron strapwork. There is a small single-storey wing against the east gable end, which has a single light to the front, originally used for hanging bacon. The rear of the building has two gabled half-dormers containing late 20th-century windows under flat stone lintels, with single-light windows below and an additional light offset between.
Inside, there is a straight stair opposite the entrance, with rooms to the left and right. The principal room on the left includes a stone fireplace, possibly from the 17th century, which has a recess for a bakeoven, although the lintel is no longer present. The smaller room to the east has a renewed cast iron fireplace. A door at the rear leads to a galley kitchen. The roof structure dates from the 19th century.
