Description

Bethany English Presbyterian Church is a chapel built in 1858, constructed from squared, coursed tooled grey-brown stone with a slate overhanging roof. The building features flat eaves on the sides and brackets on the front verge. Its broad gable front has a pedimental gable, two long arched side windows, a small Palladian center window, and a large arched doorway. The corners are accentuated with tooled quoins, and the gable displays a raised string-course below a plaque that reads 'Bethania Adeiladwyd 1858 Helaethwyd 1867'. The openings are adorned with tooled sandstone voussoirs and keystones, and the windows have small-paned glazing with radiating bars at the heads. The center window has plain flat mullions and heads for the narrow side lights and an arched center light, while the entrance features panelled large double doors.

The sides of the church are made of rough rubble stone, two stories high with three windows. The windows are arched above and cambered-headed below, with red brick heads.

Inside, the chapel has a panelled plaster ceiling divided by heavy moulded plaster ribs. A three-sided gallery with curved angles is supported by five plain iron columns. The gallery boasts fine painted grained woodwork in three colors, with a deep cornice in a pale yellow tone and a panelled front above in horizontal panels with moulded inset panels, all in a dark brown tone framed by panelled pilasters. The top and bottom rail are in a paler tone. The seating consists of pine pews arranged in three blocks with shaped ends. A balustraded set fawr features turned newels and finials, mirrored by steps on each side of the pulpit platform. The broad platform has a panelled front with canted sides and a forward break. Behind the pulpit, plain vertical boarding obscures part of a plaster arched recess with moulded console capitals and blank arched windows on each side. The gallery pews have plain panelled backs and roll-mould tops. The lobby includes a center window with etched and colored marginal panes. At the back, the vestry has diagonal boarding on a three-sided roof.
