Description

Capel Salem, also known as Capel y Cwm, is a former chapel that has been converted into vestries. The building is constructed from rendered rubble stone and features a slate hipped roof with a facade on the long wall. Originally, the facade included two large arched center windows and two doors beneath two large arched gallery lights. Alterations made in 1889 introduced a triple-gabled porch, a long narrow arched outer stair light on each side, and possibly a center keyed roundel window, along with wooden quatrefoil tracery. The glazing has been largely altered, with the two center windows now boarded over.

The porch has three gables, with the central gable above the arched entry and the side gables above arched windows, which also have smaller arched side windows. A parapet made of unpainted stucco sits between the gables. The sides and rear of the building are made of rubble stone with red brick window surrounds, featuring a two-window range on the sides and a three-window range on the rear. The left side has two cambered headed windows below and two long arched windows above, while the rear has three similar windows above, with the middle window lengthened to serve as a door for outside escape. The ground floor windows are blocked but originally had stone voussoirs instead of brick surrounds.

The interior has been significantly altered, with a new floor inserted. Visible from the ground floor are iron columns and a lower cornice with brackets, along with two inserted beams. The gallery, which was five-sided and likely added around 1867, has had its front removed, resulting in a flat floor with some surviving raked pews. A plain moulded plaster cornice is present, and the later 19th-century ceiling is boarded with ribs arranged in a four-pointed star pattern, featuring a central roundel and four diamond-shaped ventilation panels. The ground floor includes some painted grained box pews with a roll-mould top, dating to around 1867, and a panelled curved 'set fawr', while the original pulpit has been replaced with a small low pulpit.
