Description
The War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure made of square-section pink marble featuring white marble panels. It has a plinth, steps, and a statue at the top. The base consists of four steps made of rock-faced pink marble, with a similar plinth and a shouldered step in smooth marble. The main section has smooth pink marble corner pilasters with wider bases and caps, which are adorned with raised squared vertical banding. The sides feature white marble panels, with the south and east sides displaying the names of those who fell in war in aluminium lettering.
Above this, a shorter two-tier upper section has similar pink marble corner pilasters and white marble panels. The inscriptions on the south side read "The Only Hope of Peace 1914 - 1918," while the east side states "Unig Gobaith Hedd 1939 - 1945." Additionally, the south side features the phrase "At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them" in Welsh, and the east side has the same phrase in English. The top section is supported by a corbelled cornice and features a statue of a female figure at the apex, holding an upright cross and an olive branch.
