Description

The War Memorial in Parc Briallu is a granite square memorial dating from the early 20th century. It features a tall main shaft made of polished brown granite that is slightly tapered, with names inscribed in raised letters. Above the shaft is a neo-Grec frieze crafted from matt silver-grey marble, topped with a flat granite cap that splayed outward and is adorned with acanthus leaf ornamentation at the rounded angles. The base is also made of matt silver-grey marble and is chamfered on a plinth.

On the left side of the main shaft, the word 'FRANCE' is displayed along with 51 names, while the right side lists a further 22 names along with the locations of death. The front of the memorial bears the dates '1914-1918', the inscription 'ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION', and the dedication 'TO THE SACRED MEMORY OF THOSE BRAVE MEN FROM LLANSAMLET WHO DURING THE GREAT WAR GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY'. Below this, it includes the Welsh phrase 'BUONT FEIRW ER I NI GAEL BYW', and notes that it was unveiled by Colonel S. Watts Morgan M.P. CBE DSO on January 7, 1922, with Mr. Richard Rees of Elm Cottage serving as the chairman of the committee.
