Description

The Maritime & Industrial Museum is a two-storey building facing South Dock, featuring a long elevation. It has a pilaster treatment with double pilasters and four bays from the west, where a small extension may have been added. The building includes a plinth and eaves course with diagonal headers, alternating bays with arched bipartite windows, and wide segmental arches, with sliding doors inside the ground floor openings. A modern cantilevered walkway on the first floor has double escape stairs.

The west entrance gable has stepped and corbelled eaves, modern bargeboards, and features traceried oculus and lunette windows on the upper floor. The ground floor has a lean-to canopy with a fretted valence and cast-iron columns, along with segmental glazed openings below. The wider east gable includes a large upper arched recess with an oculus flanked by arched openings, a projecting cill band, and twin segmental ground floor openings, with an open ground floor under a girder to the right.

At the rear, the elevation steps out near the west end, creating a projecting upper floor supported by horizontal girders and ironwork columns with Corinthian capitals, with a railway siding underneath. There are twin arched windows in stepped recessed panels above.

Inside, the museum retains an open boarded roof with lightweight metal trusses. The main floor is of fireproof construction, featuring cross-girders on central lattice stanchions and shallow segmental plates in between. The interiors have been subdivided.
