Description

The memorial to the South African War features a pink granite pedestal set on pale and dark grey granite steps. It has dark grey granite columns at the corners, and the upper part of the pedestal is octagonal, adorned with bronze wreaths and a heraldic shield. Atop the pedestal is a white stone statue of a soldier holding a bronze rifle, who is depicted protecting a fallen comrade. This soldier is said to have been modeled by Sergeant O. S. Bird, a physical education teacher at Swansea Grammar School. Inscriptions on the pedestal commemorate the monument's origins and list the names of those who fell, with the phrase, "For that fair motherland which gave them birth nobly to dare, nobly to die."
