Description
2 Southend Villas is a Regency style house built in the second quarter of the 19th century, as shown on the 1844 Oystermouth Tithe map. Originally a single residence, it became the Southend Hotel in the 20th century and was later divided into three apartments in the late 20th century.
The building is a three-storey, three-bay structure with a stuccoed front and a renewed slate roof, although the chimney stacks have been removed. The symmetrical front features hornless sash windows with margin lights that have been inserted into the original openings. The upper storey windows display stressed keystones, while the middle storey has thin moulded architraves and a sill band. The lower storey also features similar thin moulded architraves. The central doorway is framed by a doorcase with pilasters and an open pediment supported by consoles, and it has a replaced panelled door with a plain overlight.
On the right side wall, there are modern windows, and an added single-bay projection set back from the main façade also has modern windows. The left side wall includes steps leading up to an inserted first-floor doorway beneath a narrow extension that is attached to the Pilot public house. At the rear, there is a one-storey gabled projection added at the level of the upper storey of the main house, with rooms in the lower storeys built into the bank.
Number 2 occupies the middle storey of the original house.
