Description

1 Southend Villas, along with 2 and 3 Southend Villas, was built in the second quarter of the 19th century and is depicted on the 1844 Oystermouth Tithe map. The building later became the Southend Hotel in the 20th century and was divided into three apartments in the late 20th century.

This Regency style house is three stories tall and has three bays, featuring a stuccoed front and a renewed slate roof, although the stacks have been removed. The symmetrical facade includes hornless sash windows with margin lights fitted into the original openings. The upper storey windows are adorned with stressed keystones, while the middle storey displays thin moulded architraves and a sill band. The lower storey also features similar thin moulded architraves. The central doorway is framed by a doorcase with pilasters and an open pediment supported by consoles, leading to a replaced panelled door with a plain overlight.

On the right side wall, there are modern windows, and an added single-bay projection set back also features modern windows. The left side wall has steps beneath a narrow extension that is attached to the Pilot public house, leading up to an inserted first-floor doorway. At the rear, which is at a higher ground level, there is an added one-storey gabled projection aligned with the upper storey of the main house, beneath which are rooms in the lower storeys built into the bank.

Number 1 occupies the lower storey of the original house.
