Description

Oystermouth Library is an Art-Deco style single-storey building dating from the early 20th century, featuring a 7-bay front. The walls are rendered and painted cream, topped by a hipped slate roof that sits behind a parapet adorned with a frieze of narrow flutes. The central entrance bay is taller and projects forward, displaying the name 'Oystermouth Branch Library' in raised letters above the doorway. The Swansea coat of arms is featured in low relief in stone above the frieze.

The main entrance is set within a shallow porch supported by two cast iron columns, with stone benches on either side. The double doors are half lit, featuring fielded panels below star-shaped glazed panels. On either side of the doorway are polished granite tablets that commemorate the building and opening of the library. The bays flanking the entrance have plain architraves and windows that have been replaced in their original openings. The return elevations and rear also have similar windows. An integral rear projection spans the five central bays and has simpler detailing.

Inside, the octagonal entrance lobby includes a glazed screen opposite the main doors, which is fitted with metal glazing bars and margin lights. Round-backed niches flank the main doors. The doorways leading to the main rooms are half-lit with panelling below X-shaped glazed panels, and wooden panels with raised fields are positioned above the doors.
