Description
The Cheese Market is a simple classical two-storey building dating from the 18th century. It features coursed freestone elevations facing High Town and Market Street, with a central pediment that contains a blind recess, possibly intended for a date stone, and a rock-faced plinth on the former elevation. The roof is slate, complemented by a rubble chimney stack and very wide eaves with a moulded cornice.
The ground floor is open and railed on the north and south sides, showcasing twin segmental arches in antis with a single central column and responds. The arches are adorned with tooled voussoirs and keystones. The western end is constructed of rubble, which may indicate that it was once attached to another building, but it now features a modern shelter. The building has small pane sash windows and an entrance at the southeast end, which consists of an eight-panel double door framed by an architrave, with panelled reveals and a fanlight above. Modern public conveniences have been added into the right-hand opening on the south side.
Inside, the building retains a broad oak staircase and half-round fluted columns surrounding the fireplace in the upper room.
