Description
This is a farmhouse, likely dating to the late 17th or early 18th century, with later additions. It is built of colourwashed rubble stone with corrugated iron or asbestos sheet roofs and end chimneys; the main range has a stone chimney on the right side and a brick chimney on the left, with a stone chimney to the right of the rear wing. The house is arranged in an L-shape, with the main range running downslope. The front of the main range has a 16-pane sash window with a timber lintel to the left and a 9-pane sash window with a dripstone to the right, with a smaller 4-pane window set under the eaves above. The right end wall features a c.1920 5-pane sash window in a brick surround, positioned above a c.1920 doorway, both set to the right. The right side of the house incorporates a wing, and behind this wing is a half-glazed door leading to an upper room, along with a window. The upper gable end shows a slight step in the stonework about halfway up the gable, and evidence of a blocked opening. The right wing has two similar c.1920 5-pane sash windows under the eaves, overlooking two square windows below, and a former door, now a window, between them. There are no windows on the end or rear wall of this wing.
The original part of the farmhouse has a two-room downhill plan, with a substantial chimneybreast at the lower end and entry originally from the end wall. It is possible that a winding stair was once located here. The roof appears to be of a single build date, from the late 17th to early 18th century. The ground floor has a significant step between the lower and upper rooms, requiring two beams positioned at different levels. The lower room has three chamfered beams: one against the fireplace, one in the centre, and a third close to a beam at the height of the upper room ceiling; the joists are square. The fireplace has been filled in with black brick and a Coalbrookdale grate, and the lintel may have been removed. The right side wall has been altered multiple times, with a door leading to the wing just inside the present front door, followed by a door opposite the chimneybreast and then a blocked door, with a final door also leading to the wing. C19th or C20th century stairs were once situated against the right side wall. There's a step up into the upper room, which also has three beams: one close to the upper beam of the lower room, one chamfered to the centre and relatively thin but deep, and one at the upper end above the fireplace, with stone voussoirs. Partly uncovered cupboards or recesses are located each side of the fireplace. The loft has a massive stepped chimney breast at the lower end, and a triple-purlin roof with three trusses. The first truss has been altered, with a cut end for its junction with the wing; the second has a plastered partition and a heavy collar morticed in; the third truss is similar, with visible vertical pieces of timber linking the truss feet to the beam beneath. A blocked loft door is present at the upper end. The wing’s ground floor has a beamed ceiling with two heavy beams and square joists, alongside a cambered timber lintel over the fireplace. C20th century stairs have been inserted. Above, two oak trusses are supported by small shaped oak pads, and secured with bolted collars.
