Description
The barn at Blaengavenny Farm is a large threshing barn constructed from red sandstone and grey pennant rubble, featuring partial timber framing and a roof covered in corrugated steel sheeting. It dates from the 18th century. The front elevation facing the road has opposed central doors, with a stone wall to the left and timber framing to the right, which is partially boarded. The timber doors have a slight porch projection, and there is a gabled dormer in the roof to the right.
On the farmyard side, there is a low stone wall to the left, which includes a door and a window, with timber framing and boarding above. To the right of the doors, a stone wall features two slit vents, although this is partly obscured by a later lean-to shed. The gables are made of stone and have three tiers of slit vents. The apex of the west gable is boarded, which may have been an intentional design or a result of a collapse.
Inside, the barn has some panels of timber framing that support a wallplate. It is a five-bay barn with a central threshing floor. The structure includes four queen strut trusses, three tiers of trenched purlins, and a ridge piece. Most of these elements are original, although some of the secondary rafters have been re-used.
