Description
Bettws Chapel is a small rectangular single cell building with medieval origins. The walls are constructed of red sandstone rubble, while the Victorian rebuilding features square cut and rock-faced stone. The openings are dressed in freestone, and the roof is made of Welsh slate.
The entrance gable includes a door framed in pointed arch ashlar, and above it is a 2-light ashlar plate tracery window with stone mullions and trefoil heads. At the apex of the gable, there is a small bellcote, and to the right, a tall ashlar stack with a round shaft and tapered top serves as a kneeler. The street elevation features a medieval doorway with a pointed head, which is blocked and located well above the current ground level. Next to this is another 2-light window similar to the one above the door. The base of this wall displays medieval masonry, while the east gable is primarily medieval and includes a 3-light window with lancet lights and a gable cross. The north wall was not observed during the resurvey in May 1997.
The interior was also not seen during the resurvey but is noted to have Victorian fittings and a plastered finish that conceals its medieval origins.
