Description
The barn at Pen-y-dre Farm is a Grade II listed building constructed from coursed red sandstone rubble with a Welsh slate roof. The south gable is entirely made of stone, while the other three walls are stone up to about 2 meters high, above which there are two tiers of timber-framed panels that are concealed by close boarding. These features, along with the slate roof, likely date from the late 19th century to early 20th century. The barn has central opposed doors, and the stone gable includes two tiers of slit vents and an owl hole at the apex.
This five-bay barn features Queen strut trusses and heavy timber framing, with chamfered main posts that are bracketted to both the wall plate and the tie beam. It has three tiers of trenched purlins and a ridge piece, all of which are original. A distinctive aspect of the barn is the diagonal framing found in the apex of the north gable.
