Description

The chapel and surrounding cemetery wall are a small chapel with an attached schoolroom, built using stone rubble, partly rendered, and with a Welsh slate roof. The roof has overhanging boarded eaves, and there’s a stone stack on the northeast side and a ridge ventilator. A roadside wall, battered in form, runs around the site.

The chapel is two bays wide. A rear bay, acting as a schoolroom, was added later and has access to the first floor via a set of steps reminiscent of a granary. The chapel windows have round heads with radial glazing, two on each side, while the schoolroom window is a standard eight/eight pane sash. A porch, added to the south side, incorporates a bell.

The rubble wall has flat coping and a gateway near the chapel, featuring a wide wrought iron gate with spear finials and stone jambs. A large dedication plaque in an ashlar surround marks the area where the original cemetery meets a mid-19th century expansion.

The wall encloses a cemetery of exceptional quality, containing numerous well-carved and lettered 18th and 19th century headstones, as well as a group of chest tombs listed separately. It is reputed that a window in the schoolroom interior could be opened to create a gallery for the chapel.
