Description
This building, known as F.E. Richards, Butcher & Floriana, features a steep slate roof, boxed eaves, and a roughcast chimney stack on the left, which likely originally had another chimney on the right that has since been roofed over. The first floor has two 16-pane sash windows with thick glazing bars and flush frames, while the Corn Exchange part to the right has a modern window. The shop front is a later addition, made of corrugated material, with a cross-windowed design, a public house entrance on the right, and a splayed shop entrance on the left.
The roughcast gable end wall facing Beaufort Street once had a 'Round House' extension, as depicted in a view from 1750. This wall now features an exposed chimney breast that is corbelled at the top of the ground floor. There are two small-pane sash windows with broad architraves, including one in the attic.
The main part of the Corn Exchange Inn is no longer considered to have special interest. Floriana, which is adjacent to the left, occupies the first floor and attic of the property above the shop. The interior retains chamfered beams in the main room and tenoned purlins in the roof structure.
