Description

The Old House is a 17th-century stone building with a stone-slate roof, featuring one storey and semi-attics. The rear of the roof has roof-lights, and the central chimney has been rebuilt in stone. The lower windows have modern oak frames, and there is a modern oak door in a partly blocked opening. Older windows are found under timber lintels, which are chamfered to the hall, and there are stone labels on the front. Some of these windows have been partly restored and are deeply splayed internally, with one window built into the cross-passage doorway. A lean-to structure made of stone and stone-slate is also present. The footings are notably slabby, especially at the southern end.

Inside, the hall features a plain intermediate truss with only a chamfered tiebeam. The stout purlins are mostly original, and the fireplace has a plastered finish with a deep timber lintel. The dais has a partition made of chamfered oak planks and muntins, with two of the three tiers being original and displaying good carpenter's marks. The ceiling beams have pyramidal stop-chamfers. There is a stout door-frame by the chimney, and the lower end has ceiling beams with angled stop-chamfers. Above, the upper part of a cruck truss is embedded at the back of the chimney and is of poor quality, featuring a collar and yoke. The roof consists of three bays, with collars and tiebeams that have been sawn off, while the purlins are largely original. There is a small fireplace in the northern gable with splayed jambs and an arch cut into the tiebeam. One framed partition remains fairly complete.
