Description
5 St Mary Street is a former house that has been converted into a club. The building features a rendered exterior with a roughcast front facing St Mary Street. It stands four storeys tall and has five windows, although the ground floor is rendered. The roof is hipped, covered with slate and has red tile ridges. There is a modillion eaves cornice and a band at the first floor level. The windows are small-pane sash types set in moulded architraves, with a Venetian window in the central bay on the first floor.
On the ground floor, the central bay features an impressive moulded wooden doorcase with a pediment, Doric pilasters, a cornice, and a fanlight with tracery. This doorcase is flanked by Venetian windows that have interlaced arched glazing bars. The building has been converted for club use, which includes suspended ceilings, but it is said to retain its contemporary mouldings and cornices. At the rear of the bar, there is an exceptionally fine late 18th-century wooden staircase with turned balusters and a panelled dado.
