Description
Compton House, which includes Oxfam and Hayfever, is a late Georgian building that stands three storeys tall and features a three-window rubble front. It likely has origins dating back to the late 17th or early 18th century. The building is topped with a steep hipped slate roof that has wide modillion eaves. On the left side, there is a large rubble chimney breast that has been truncated, with the roof extended over it.
The second floor has 6-pane sash windows, while the first floor features 12-pane sash windows, both with voussoir lintels. The original shop front on the right, which houses Oxfam, showcases a dentil cornice, bracket ends, and fluted, partially cabled end pilasters. It has twin arched shop windows on either side of a splayed central entrance, complete with traceried spandrels, a panelled stallriser, and half-glazed double doors. To the left, the shop front for Hay Fever is simpler, with a plane design and Art Nouveau glass at the top.
The right side elevation is also made of rubble and features similar eaves and windows, which are offset to the right. The rear of the building curves slightly, with modillion eaves extending over a Regency doorcase that has fluted pilasters, panelled reveals, and a half-glazed door. Above this, on the second floor, there is a 12-pane sash window, with a horned sash below it and a modern ground floor window. The end wall is also constructed of rubble.
