Description

Crickie farmhouse, also known as Crugiau, is a Grade II listed building that includes an in-line farm range. The structure consists of three units: at the center is an early 18th century three-bay house with a single storey and attic, featuring single-depth rooms. To the left is a two-storey extension to the house, and to the right is a two-bay byre and hayloft range. A large barn range, which is separately listed, crosses at right angles, with an attached granary and stable on the right.

The farmhouse is constructed of stone rubble with a Welsh slate roof and brick stacks at the ends and ridge. The later wing includes some dressed stone. The farm buildings are partly limewashed, with mostly corrugated roofs, though a small area adjacent to the house has a Welsh slate roof. The older house features three gabled roof dormers and windows below, all under stone hoods with timber lintels, and renewed casements. The doorway has a hipped hood and a door made of wide boards. The two-storey extension to the left has a shallower roof pitch and 8/8 pane sash windows with slender glazing bars under dressed stone lintels on each floor. At the rear, a former cider cellar and room have been converted into additional living accommodation.

The adjoining older unit to the right has a slightly different roof pitch and comprises the two-bay byre range. It features a doorway under a shallow timber lintel, a small window to the right with a thick wooden frame and two slender mullions, and a pitching door to the loft above. The end bay is open at first floor level where it adjoins the barn, which has a ground floor doorway. At the rear, there is a doorway and a large blocked doorway with a timber lintel, as well as a ventilation slit. The house is bordered by a low stone wall with metal railings and gates, forming a small courtyard separate from the main farmyard.

The original plan of the older house unit is preserved, with a parlour to the left and a kitchen to the right, and an intervening staircase hallway with a dairy at the rear. A steep wooden staircase ascends from the hallway at the front left. The lintel to the remodelled fireplace in the left room is chamfered, and there are stopped cross beams, along with some old planked doors. The fireplace in the right kitchen retains a bread oven. The byre features pegged A-frame trusses and staggered trenched purlins.
