Description
The Bank of three limekilns, built in the early 19th century, is located behind Kiln Lodge and is associated with the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal, near Govilon Wharf. It likely dates to the period around 1805 when a section of the canal was completed under engineer Thomas Cartwright, although it may have also been constructed during the works in 1812.
The canal, promoted in 1792, began construction in 1797 but halted in 1800 after completing sections west of Gilwern. The section east of Govilon was finished in 1805, with the final stretch from west of Llanfoist to Pontymoile opening in 1812 under engineer William Crosley. This canal was crucial for transporting iron, lime, and coal, serving the Usk valley and the surrounding coalfield.
The limekilns are constructed from local stone and feature pilaster strips between each kiln. They have a high ramped revetment wall, approximately 6.5 meters tall, with segmental-arched deep openings, known as 'eyes', that include voussoirs and keystones. The central kiln has a pair of 'eyes', while the flanking kilns have single openings. The height of these openings, around 1.6 meters, has been reduced due to the raised grassed bank of the Kiln Lodge garden. To the right of the paired kiln is a narrower and taller cylindrical flue, which may have originally served as a charging hole. This site is recognized as a fine example of early 19th-century limekilns and for its historical connections to the canal.
