Description

The Canal Warehouse at Govilon Wharf is a rectangular, three-storey rubble building constructed after 1821, serving as Bailey's iron warehouse. Govilon Wharf was significant for the local iron industry and acted as the terminus for Bailey's Tramroad from Nantyglo Ironworks. The Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal, which was built between 1797 and 1812, played a crucial role in transporting iron, lime, and coal until the railway began to take over its traffic.

The warehouse features a hipped slate roof, which retains some old slates at the front despite the addition of two skylights. The canal-side elevation is symmetrical, with two broadly spaced windows on either side of a central boarded door, all of which have camber-headed openings with stone voussoirs and stone sills. There are various modern two-light timber casements present. On the right side of the building, there is a large triangular cast-iron frame that once supported a crane. An outside staircase leads to a first-floor loading door. At the rear, there are two similar windows on the first and second floors, along with a camber-headed doorway on the ground floor. A relocated Great Western Railway boundary post is located to the west.

This warehouse is listed for its special interest as a rare surviving example of an early 19th-century canal warehouse associated with the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal. It also holds group value with other listed canal structures at Govilon.
