Description

The Govilon Boat Club Building, constructed around 1821, is located at Govilon Wharf, which was an important site for the local iron industry and served as a canal-side office building. This wharf was significant for trade in iron, lime, and coal, and was associated with Bailey's Tramroad from Nantyglo Ironworks, which opened on December 6, 1821. Although the canal was completed in 1805 under Thomas Cartwright, the wharf and its buildings were built after 1821. The building has undergone modern alterations and is currently used by the Govilon Boat Club.

The structure is a rectangular, whitewashed rubble building with a hipped slate roof. The elevation facing the canal features a lean-to and a modern extension to the west, with camber-headed openings at the east end that include 4-pane casements and a gabled porch. On the north side, away from the canal, there is a square-headed 12-pane sash window to the left and an iron, 20-pane fixed-light window to the right, which has a cambered head and voussoirs. The center of the north side has projecting masonry, possibly a former chimney breast. Additionally, there is a lozenge-shaped weight-restriction panel and a relocated round-headed milestone from the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal.

Despite the alterations, this building is recognized as a surviving 19th-century structure associated with the Brecon and Abergavenny Canal and has group value with other listed items at Govilon Wharf.
