Description
Llanwenarth Baptist Church is a broad chapel dating from the 18th century. It features a distinctive half-hipped slate roof and rendered elevations, except for the west side, which is slate-hung. The main front, facing south, is two stories high with two windows, a plat band, and 19th-century 16-pane sash windows that have camber heads on the ground floor. There is an offset entrance with recessed replaced doors. At the downhill end, there are a pair of tall round-headed sash windows with horned small-pane glazing, and a date-stone is positioned at the top. A blocked doorway is located on the east side.
The burial ground contains a notable collection of Georgian and Victorian tombstones, and the boundary wall features an iron gate in ogee Gothic style that opens onto the canal bank.
Inside, the church retains a largely 18th-century interior, with a gallery extending along three sides and box pews. The original church comprised the northern half of the current structure. The raked gallery has a balustraded front and is supported by cast-iron columns at the front and full-height octagonal chamfered piers in the middle, which were added when the building was enlarged. The simple box pews have panelled backs and doors, and they are angled towards the sides. A modern ceiling with roses has been installed. The pulpit, located in the center of the north wall between the tall round-headed windows, is inscribed with the dates and initials '1706, I E 1737, R 1869, 1696 F L, 1955'. The baptistery is situated below the pulpit, and there is a fireplace on the east wall, along with staircases on either side of the lobby.
