Description
Llanfoist House is a substantial mid-Georgian three-storey, double-pile house. The original structure features a symmetrical five-window rendered front with stone quoins, plat bands, and a coved and bracketed eaves cornice beneath a hipped slate roof, although the chimneys have been removed. It has small-pane sash windows with gently cambered heads and keystones on the first and ground floors, while the second floor has horned nine-pane windows and twelve-pane windows below. The central entrance boasts massive panelled double doors with a plain overlight and was formerly adorned with a broad porch.
To the left, there is a 1920s extension that matches the original style and includes a Doric doorcase. The rear has seen various extensions and modern alterations but still retains a sash window with marginal glazing at the centre and brick chimneys. A conservatory has been added to the right side.
The right part of the house maintains significant 18th and 19th-century character, showing signs of its sub-medieval origins. However, some damage has occurred due to its subdivision into separate dwellings. Inside, there are six-panel doors and panelled shutters throughout, along with reused oak timbers. The coved entrance hall features a Minton tiled floor and leads to a staircase that appears to have been narrowed when a dividing wall was added. The staircase retains a turned scrolled newel, a swept-up handrail, turned balusters with annulettes, and plaster roundels at the half landing. The drawing room to the right has plaster panelled walls and an ornate cornice with vine trails. The cellar includes one barrel vaulted chamber. The left part of the house retains some 17th-century beams in the dining room, while the drawing room features a marbled fireplace and a cornice similar to that in the right part.
