Description
The Old Granary and the Old Laundry form an outbuilding and former lofted coach-house, dating from the 18th century. The building is constructed of colourwashed rubble stone with a slate eaves roof, distinguished by a timber bell turret centrally positioned on the ridge. It is a tall, two-storey-and-attic structure, originally comprising three bays, with moulded eaves and a pediment. The restored roof cupola features two-bay openings on each side, defined by square piers with caps and bases, arched heads, and a cornice leading to an ogee square leaded dome topped with a ball finial and iron vane. Openings are adorned with cut purple sandstone heads. The pediment incorporates a blocked lunette, with a clock face added within.
The main front displays a first-floor moulded cross-window on each side, constructed with cut stone voussoirs and a keystone, above a segmental arched opening with voussoirs and a keystone. The central section slightly projects beneath the pediment, featuring a similar segmental-headed blank opening at first floor level, above a broad segmental arched coach entry with voussoirs, a keystone, and double boarded doors. The left end is plainly rendered and includes an attic window. A stone staircase leads to a first-floor door on the right end wall, which has a cambered head and dripstone. Cross-windows are present on the first floor to the left and to the attic, both with oak lintels and dripstones. Overhanging verges are visible. The ground level slopes, resulting in high external stairs incorporating an elliptical arched recess with stone voussoirs. The rear north side contains a cross-window to the ground floor left and a windowless basement.
The Old Laundry, a single-storey rear wing at a lower level, has a slate roof and a colourwashed two-storey, three-bay east front with windows within Gothic openings. Upper windows are pointed with stone sills, containing 20th-century casement pairs within arch heads. Ground floor windows are set within large ogee surrounds and feature 20th-century 12-pane hopper windows with plain painted timber above the arch heads, also with stone sills. A plain flat-headed door is located on the ground floor left. A tall, thin 20th-century chimney sits on the roof slope to the right of centre. The north gable end displays similar windows, with an ogee-headed 12-pane window to the ground floor, an ogee-headed casement pair to the first floor, and an ogee-headed 9-pane window to the attic. The rear west side contains modern metal windows, two to the first floor and one to the ground floor centre, accompanied by a door to the left and a large stone wall-face chimney to the right.
The interior has not been inspected.
