Description

The former tannery at Aberdeunant is a Grade II listed outbuilding constructed from rubble stone, which is partly whitewashed, and features a slate roof with a square stone chimney stack at the eastern end, complete with dripstones. The front of the building has undergone significant alterations; the left side retains rubble stone, while the central section is made of 20th-century concrete blockwork, featuring two square loft windows above three broad doors of varying widths. The right side displays a ragged edge of whitewashed rubble stone, indicating a join with the western section. This section has a very long timber lintel beneath the eaves, supporting full-height barn doors, with a brick and stone pier and a square loft window. The pier and loft window are positioned above a timber lintel that spans a broad barn entry, which reaches two-thirds of the height, with a brick pier separating this opening from the full-height opening to the left.

The rear of the eastern range is whitewashed, featuring a chimney to the right, followed by a windowless section, a door with a timber lintel, and a square window with a timber lintel to the left, along with a boarded loft light under the eaves further left. The eastern gable end includes a loft light. The rear of the western range is windowless and whitewashed, with two full-height circular rubble stone piers encased in rubble walling; one pier is located right against the join with the eastern range, while the other is positioned left of center, with a timber lintel spanning between them. The western end wall has two ground floor vent loops.

Inside the eastern range, there is a slate-flagged throughway at the center, with 19th-century wooden partitions on each side and doors leading into the western and eastern rooms. The eastern room features a slate flagged floor, a plastered ceiling, a blocked small fireplace, and one beam. The western room contains two beams, an earth floor, and a large chimney at the eastern end. Timber stairs are located in the southwest corner. The feet of cruck trusses are visible, with one in the southwest corner and two on the northern wall. Recesses that may have been former windows are present on the southern wall, one above the other, with whitewashed plaster. The fireplace in this room is made of stone with a renewed large timber lintel, and there is a blocked window to the left. The upstairs area has plastered walls and ceilings, four trusses, a blocked window on the front wall, and a blocked small fireplace at the western end.

The western range features three pegged tie-beam-and-collar trusses, one against the eastern wall and two inserted beams located at the center and towards the western end, one of which is dated to R Thomas in 1889. Two of the trusses correspond to round pillars in the southern wall.
