Description

Dolwerdd is a 17th century building constructed from whitewashed rubble stone with corrugated iron roofs, which were formerly thatched. The structure consists of two two-storey ranges, with the taller main range located to the right. This main range features stone end wall stacks, including a large square stack on the left and a smaller one on the right gable end. The front has two first floor windows, with a ground floor door to the left, a window in the center, and another window to the right, all aligned with the first floor windows above. The ground floor has timber lintels. The stone rear wall has partly collapsed as of 1996 and includes one ground floor window with a frame that has holes for diagonally-set timber mullions, making it one of only two known examples in Ceredigion.

The lower west range, located to the left, has a small brick west stack and two small four-pane windows under the eaves, along with a ground floor door to the left and two additional four-pane windows. There is some cob-walling to the left of the door and a substantially cob-walled west end, except for a rebuilt gable. The west end features one small window on the ground floor to the left and a larger window on the first floor to the right. The rear is made of rubble stone with an added stone and slate lean-to.

Access to both ranges is through a lobby entry located on the left side of the taller east range. The lower west end includes a fireplace with a chamfered lintel on the east side. The layout consists of two rooms, with the east room having two boxed beams and a third beam over the partition wall to the west, while the west part is subdivided. The loft contains three fine cruck trusses with pegged collars and double purlins, which do not support the current roof that has been raised. There is a post and panel partition under the second truss.

The upper east end has a lobby entry with plank doors and two ground floor rooms, featuring two heavy beams and small end fireplaces. A dog-leg stair with stick balusters is located in the corner of the left room, replacing a blocked fireplace stair. A moulded post and panel partition is visible in the stair cupboard. On the first floor, there are two heavy crucks with pegged collars, which are buried in the wall at their feet, suggesting they may be full crucks or raised.
