Description

The Main Farm Ranges at Gelligatti are constructed from rubble stone with sandstone voussoirs around the openings and feature slate roofs. The main structure consists of a very large cow-house that runs north to south, characterized by three tall stepped arched windows in the south gable. At the southwest and southeast corners, there are small single-storey hipped dairy and workshop sections. The southern end includes a two-storey cross-range, which appears to be older and has been partly remodelled, hipped to the east and west. To the north, there is an additional two-storey granary range that runs north, hipped at the northern end. This granary originally had a grain loft on the first floor, seed-bins on the ground floor, and goose-pens beneath the northern end floor. From the eastern end of the cross-range, a range of pig-sties extends, while from the western end, an L-plan range of barn and cart-sheds encloses the southern and western sides of a farm court.

The main cow-house features a very steep roof supported by large wish-bone trusses over low tie-beams. The windows and doors on the western side are arranged in the sequence WDWWDW. The cross-range to the west has a cart-entry on the southern side and a loft door above it. The L-plan range includes a door, a later broad entry, and a door on the southern front, followed by a short lower section with a door, before returning to a section with three wide-spaced cart-entries and three closer-spaced entries at the upper end. All these entries feature sandstone voussoirs to cambered arches, except for the first entry, which has been altered with a timber lintel. The eastern side of the main cow-house has a broad altered entry, with windows and doors arranged as WWDW. The eastern end of the cross-range has a loft window above a window and door on the southern front. The pig-sties beyond have timber lintels over their entries, and an enclosing wall runs south from the southeast angle of the pig-sties.

At the rear, there are outside stairs in the eastern angle leading to the northern range, which has a window, door, and two vent loops on the eastern side. The northern end features two low entries to the goose-pens and a door above. The roof has six collar trusses. The western side has two similar vent loops above a window and a broad door on each floor. The northern side of the L-plan range includes a gabled door with steps leading up. An added lean-to on the left has the shafts of former machinery that was driven by water power, although the wheel is no longer present. The roof at this section is hipped at the northwest angle.
