Description
Salem Baptist Chapel is a Gothic-style building with a gabled front made of squared rubble, featuring raised sandstone ashlar corner pilasters that extend up to the apex. The chapel has a slate roof, wooden soffits, and moulded wooden bargeboards. The central pointed doorway is framed by dressed stone voussoirs and has paired panelled doors with a Y-tracery fanlight above. On either side of the door, there are long pointed Y-traceried 15-pane windows, also with dressed stone voussoirs. Above the door, there is a triplet of pointed windows, the center one taller, all with Y-tracery glazing and dressed voussoirs, and stone sills. The gable features a roundel with a wooden louvered ventilator and carved stone tablets; the left tablet reads "Salem Capel y Bedyddwr. Adeiladwyd 1829. Ail adeiladwyd 1871," while the right reads "Salem Baptist Chapel. Built 1829. Rebuilt 1871." The left elevation is rendered and has three tall pointed 13-pane Y-traceried windows, with similar windows on the right side. The rendered rear also has two tall windows matching those at the front.
In front of the chapel, there are dwarf stone walls enclosing a forecourt, complemented by cast iron railings and paired central cast iron gates and posts.
The interior, elaborately designed in 1871, features a boarded ceiling that is coved on the long sides, with three large square wooden vents on the sloping sides and three circular wooden vents in the center, the middle one intersected by diagonal ribs. There is a three-sided timber gallery that slightly curves, supported by plain iron columns with moulded bases and sills, and long panels of decorative cast iron balustrading. The seating includes a big seat with panelled sides and cast iron balustrading above. The corners and side entries have chamfered newels with carved tapering finials. The timber pulpit has a polygonal front with a moulded sill and base, featuring round arched panels filled with cast iron openwork. Flanking the pulpit are sweeping staircases with turned balusters and newels matching those of the pulpit. Behind the pulpit is a tall plaster round-arched surround with fluted sides and leaf decoration on the corbels and head. The pews have shaped ends, panelled backs, and doors, with metal eyes for Communion glasses. The gallery has raked pews, and the rear lobby window features a central lozenge pane with marginal coloured glazing. There is also a fixed brass offering box from 1904 in the lobby.
