Description
East Bailiffs Lodge at Aberglasney is a Grade II listed building located to the northwest of Aberglasney House, just beyond the lodge and next to the lane leading up to Grongar Hill. It faces southeast across a courtyard that is now divided by a rubble wall adjacent to the lodge. This small coach-house has been converted for domestic use, and Aberglasney is situated within its own grounds on the western edge of the village.
The building, likely from the mid-19th century, is a two-storey structure made of rubble, with the rear whitewashed facing the lane. It features a slate roof and modern brick chimney stacks. The front, which faces the courtyard, has a three-by-three window arrangement, and the Bailiff’s House includes a rubble-walled forecourt. The outlines of semicircular arched carriage entries can still be seen on the small coach-house. Most windows are modern casements, with a sash window on the Bailiff’s House, all featuring voussoirs. The Bailiff’s House has a broad boarded door, while the small coach-house has a modern porch and a set-back hipped outbuilding with a corrugated roof at the left end. The rear of the small coach-house has only two windows, while the Bailiff’s House has four windows on the first floor, mostly modern top-hung casements. Notably, one window in the center of the Bailiff’s House is said to have been removed from the Bishop’s Palace at Nantgaredig; it is made of freestone, features a late-medieval four-centred head, and has leaded glazing.
Inside the Bailiff’s House, there is reportedly a plaster ornamented fireplace that was removed from Aberglasney House.
This building is included for its group value with other listed items at Aberglasney. The property has not been inspected.
